Traditional Scottish Whin Stone

Writer: Edwin LuggEdwin Lugg

Whin stone is robust in strength and has been used historically across Scotland. It many uses include boundary walls, agricultural use and has been used to fortify gable ends in places such as Newport Upon-Tay near Dundee.

The wall pictured was originally damaged due to a lack of drainage and maintenance. It has been rebuilt using a suitable lime binder in a random style. The wall backs on to the site of a beautiful church based in the heart of Fife.

The wall was reinstated along with suitable drainage to allow water to pass through the wall safely without damaging the integrity of the wall.
