Garden walls make a major contribution to biodiversity and offer shelter to mice, spiders, slow worm and a whole slew of insects.
Throughout the countryside, mortared walls are rich in flora. Its common to find mosses, ivy and lichen blanketing older walls. They provide an array of mixed greens.
Drystone walls provide a home to animals, plants and insects too. Conditions can vary and small pockets can provide an ideal wintering station. Often, you'll find an upright cope stone for robins and other species of bird to perch.
This summer we rebuilt a sandstone wall for Burntisland Golf Club House in Fife. All in one day, we came across a toad in the heart of the wall, a deer and the course cat! According to the regulars the cat stays there.
The Mason Works provide a considered approach to the maintenance and building of our mortared and drystone walls. Habitats are in a constant state of change through human and naturally occurring influence. With this in mind, we are sympathetic in our practice and believe traditional techniques such as drystone walling are a sensitive way of encouraging species to thrive.
